Celebrating Tradition, Community, and Hunter Derby Sport in Nova Scotia
It was truly an honour to be invited to photograph Derby Day at Albro Creek Farm this past October. What began as a somewhat spontaneous idea by the passionate owners of Albro Creek quickly became a beautifully executed hunter derby event, full of camaraderie, enthusiasm, and a deep appreciation for tradition.
There was a running joke throughout the day about how quickly everything had come together — but it was clear that every detail, from start to finish, was thoughtfully planned and infused with genuine care. The result was an unforgettable equestrian event that celebrated both the sport and the people who love it.
Events like Derby Day are such a beautiful reminder of why I love photographing horses beyond the show ring — especially the quiet, personal moments between horses and the people who love them.

A Hunter Derby Experience Rooted in Learning and Community
From the vibrant ribbons and impressive trophies to the carefully selected prizes, Derby Day at Albro Creek Farm was a visual treat. More importantly, the event created an encouraging space for learning and growth among an incredibly talented group of young riders from across Nova Scotia.
This hunter derby wasn’t just about competition — it was about education, confidence-building, and fostering a supportive equestrian community. Events like this remind us why equestrian sport is so special: the shared passion, the mutual respect, and the joy that comes from growing together as riders and horsepeople.
Tailgates, Style, and a Touch of Glamour
The tailgate competition added another layer of charm to the day, showcasing the creativity and flair of participants in a way that felt both glamorous and welcoming. The atmosphere was relaxed yet polished — a perfect reflection of what a derby day should feel like.
With a fantastic turnout, beautiful styling, and an easygoing morning vibe, the event struck a balance between elegance and approachability, making it enjoyable for riders, spectators, and families alike.
Conversation with Melissa Roy: The Meaning of Derby Day
We were grateful to have the opportunity to speak with Melissa Roy, who generously shared her thoughts on what Derby Day represents and what she hoped to create with the Albro Creek Farm Derby.
“Sometimes, in today’s fast-paced and ever-changing world, it feels like the word ‘traditional’ gets looked down upon. The constant need to be bigger, better, and faster can make us forget what brought us here in the first place. For me, the introduction of derbies into the hunter rings creates a unique bridge between the past and the present — paying homage to the early beginnings of hunter competitions while giving riders a meaningful goal beyond ‘single, line, diagonal, line.’”
Bringing the Tradition of Hunter Derbies to Life
“Our goal was to invite riders to truly experience what derby-ing is all about — the tradition of being dressed to walk the course, figuring out the test, and realizing how much fun it is to challenge yourself and your horse to level up. The beauty, the nostalgia, the timelessness, and the FUN of a derby were all brought to life that day.”
One of the most meaningful moments came when a rider shared, “This is my first derby, and I rode the best rounds of my entire season today.” Seeing that kind of joy and confidence was the greatest measure of success for the event.
Capturing the Spirit of Derby Day Through Photography
As a Nova Scotia equestrian photographer, it’s days like these that remind me why documenting events like Derby Day matters. These moments — the nerves before a round, the pride after a successful ride, the laughter shared at the tailgates — tell the real story of the equestrian community.
Albro Creek Derby Day was a beautiful reminder that tradition, when honoured thoughtfully, creates space for growth, confidence, and unforgettable memories.
If you’re part of the equestrian community and want photographs that celebrate more than competition — the relationships, the learning, the quiet in-between moments — I’d love to document that for you.
