Today, we're highlighting young rider Jocelyn Rhyno and her mare, Intuition (Jewels). As detailed below, this marks the last season for Jocelyn and Jewels as a team, as Jocelyn is advancing to the 1.20M division with her new partner, Cody, this season!
Q: What specific goals do you have for this year's show season?
A: My first goal for this year was to find a new horse. It’s been a long process, but in the end it was worth it. I am so lucky and so thankful to welcome Cajulio (Cody) to the family. It has already been so much fun getting to know him. My goal with him for this year was to show in the 1.20 jumpers. I expected this goal to be met in the summer, but we have already completed a few classes at the 1.20 level. My goal when I come back home is to produce smoother, more efficient rounds at the 1.20 level. I believe this will come as Cody and I get more familiar with each other. Another goal I have is to try out the CET medal. From my understanding, Cody has never done a medal class, so this would be a new experience for both of us. My end goals for the season are to qualify for the Royal in the 1.20 junior jumper division, and if Cody likes being a medal horse, I would also like to qualify for the CET medal.
Q: Who are your biggest equestrian influences or role models?
A: My biggest role model is Geoff Teall. He was my coach from 2019 until 2024. He taught me so much in every lesson, and I always felt like I went home as a better rider. He holds so much knowledge and I am so glad that he took the time to share some with me. He pays attention to even the smallest of details, no stone remains unturned. He taught me so many horsemanship rules that I wouldn’t have known otherwise (I will never hold double reins wrong again!). He has been one of my biggest supporters and I am so thankful for everything he’s done for me. Happy retirement Geoff (finally)!
Q: What has been your proudest moment in your athletic career so far?
A: My proudest moment was at Pony Finals in 2019. I was the first Atlantic Canadian to qualify for the competition, and I was determined to make it count. I was competing on my pony Bold Dream/Dream Maker (Stella). We qualified for the medium pony division, the pony derby, and the pony medal. The medal was the class that stood out for me. My wish was to make the call back for the second round so I could “fix any mistakes I made in my first round.” I didn’t want a fancy ribbon (although it would be a nice keepsake), I just wanted to improve my riding. There were 209 people competing in the class, and only the top 20 advance to the second round. I ended up not only making the call back for the second round, but I also finished in fourth place! Stella was not a fan of indoor arenas, but we managed to overcome everything and place top five. This struggle made this accomplishment even more special. It was nice to know that I had worked to earn that ribbon.
Q: What do you enjoy doing when you're not training or competing?
A: I have a lot of hobbies. I love to learn and try new things. One of my favourite hobbies is photography. You’ve probably seen me ringside taking photos for my friends. I also sell some of my pictures. I also love to do yoga. The first time I took a deep dive into yoga was in school. I had a great teacher and she made learning yoga so much fun. I noticed such a huge difference in my flexibility. I have always been quite inflexible, but practicing yoga has helped so much. I also love hiking. I love being in nature and being surrounded by trees. I love adventuring and finding new places to go. Some of my other hobbies are reading, playing guitar, crocheting, video editing, swimming, and more.
